Stephen Balzan B.A.(Hons)Accty, CPA, AIA, TEP Stephen Balzan is one of the partners of EMD and he is the partner in charge of the International Tax Department within the firm. He holds a first degree in Accounting and has worked with two of the Big Audit firms in Malta for six years as a tax assistant and later as a manager in the International Tax Department. In the year 2001, together with his partners, he set up EMD which today has become an established multi-disciplinary firm providing legal, tax, advisory and corporate services. Stephen is a member of the Malta Institute of Taxation (MIT), the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA), the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners (IFSP), The International Tax Planning Association (ITPA), STEP and the International Fiscal Association (IFA). He was actively involved in various committees in the fields of taxation and he has on a number of occasions lectured on topics related to international tax, both in Malta and overseas. In November 2006, he was invited by the Swedish Institute of Auditors (IREV) to speak about international tax issues and on the incentives provided by Maltese fiscal legislation to international investors. Stephen continues to give various lectures and presentations and is the author of various articles on taxation. Dr. Jonathan De Giovanni A.M.I.T., LL.B., M.A. (Fin.Serv.), LL.D. Graduated as Doctor of Laws in 2009 defending a thesis entitled ‘Domestic and Treaty based Anti-Abuse Provisions to Combat Tax Treaty Abuse: An Analysis’, while contemporaneously reading for a Master of Arts in Financial Services at the University of Malta. He successfully completed his master’s degree in 2011, graduating with Merit after submitting a thesis regarding the international taxation of investment funds. Jonathan joined EMD Advocates in July 2008 and was admitted to the Bar in 2010. He currently holds the position of Manager and Tax Consultant, managing the International Tax Department and Aviation Law Department within EMD Advisory Services Limited and EMD Advocates respectively. He provides high level tax planning advice to the firm’s international client base, in relation to complex cross border operations in which Maltese corporate and non corporate vehicles are employed in a tax efficient manner. At EMD Jonathan also manages the private clients department which is a specialist arm within the tax department that caters for ultra high net worth and high net worth individuals. Jonathan advises clients who are seeking to obtain Maltese residency, both from an immigration and tax perspective. Within this remit he specialises in providing high net worth individuals with bespoke solutions and pertinent structuring for both their personal and corporate needs. Within the Aviation Law Department, his field of practice includes advising clients in relation to aircraft registration and structures involving aircraft ownership, financing and leasing.
